Morning Analysis — 2026-09-09

Dek

Oil punched through $100 with both of the world's oil chokepoints under fire, the AI chip bill nearly tripled, and the scarcest thing on the desk turned out to be neither barrels nor silicon — it's permission to build.

The Big Shift

Brent crude topped $100 for the first time since July as the US–Iran confrontation around the Strait of Hormuz escalated — Iran claims it seized a US underwater drone there, and Houthi strikes have hit Saudi Arabia's Red Sea export route at the same time (1, 2, 3). Both of the region's main export paths being squeezed at once is the scenario oil traders have feared for a decade, and it reprices every power source by fuel risk: generation with no fuel bill gets more valuable, generation that burns gas gets less. That splits our book cleanly — it strengthens the case for contracted nuclear baseload (CEG) and directly attacks the unit economics of on-site gas fuel cells (BE). What it signals next: buyers who were negotiating power on price will start negotiating on price *certainty*.

Analysis

Power. Google signed its first nuclear power purchase agreement outside the United States, with Fortum at Loviisa in Finland (4). A PPA is a long-term contract to buy a plant's output at a fixed price. This matters more than one deal: it shows hyperscalers will pay up for existing nuclear anywhere they operate, not just in a few favorable US markets. Combined with $100 oil, the implication for the CEG thesis is that uncontracted nuclear output is a scarce asset with a widening global bid — the scarcity premium isn't a US regulatory quirk. Conviction up.

Compute. Dell'Oro says data-center chip and component revenue rose 182% year-on-year in the second quarter (5). That is third-party data, not a vendor's guidance, and it says the capex wave is still accelerating — the direct input to Vertiv's cooling and power orders. The counter-narrative arrived the same night: Morgan Stanley argues the "inference era" (running models for users, versus training them) shifts money from hardware toward software (6. Note the timing gap: that's a call about 2027–28 spending mix, against a hard print about spending happening now. It's worth tracking, not trading on yet.

The friction is moving. Oregon froze all state land sales for data center projects through July 2027 (7), the first data center approved on federal land in Nevada hit a legal wall, and Heatmap counts five more states primed for moratoria (8). Google and Blackstone's Project Braid is reportedly slipping (9). Read carefully, this *reinforces* the bottleneck thesis rather than breaking it — demand isn't falling, the ability to site capacity is. But it changes which bottleneck pays: land with an existing interconnection agreement is now worth more than the equipment that goes in it, and the risk to VRT/ETN shifts from demand to *timing* — orders that arrive later than the backlog implies. Hold, watching.

Materials. Chile's copper mines are running into a power wall: ore grades keep falling (you must dig more rock per tonne of metal) and mines are electrifying, so the country's grid is straining (10). The world's largest copper source is getting slower and costlier to expand, which tightens the deficit and hands the advantage to low-cost producers elsewhere — supportive for SCCO. The majors are acting like they believe it: BHP and KGHM formed an exploration partnership (11), Rio, Teck and Newmont are funding juniors in the US Southwest (12), and Ivanhoe's Makoko discovery in the DRC grew 30% (13). Offsetting slightly: Eldorado's Skouries poured first concentrate in Greece (14) — real new supply, too small to matter.

Washington as counterparty. The US Export-Import Bank may put up to $750M into Aclara's rare-earth processing plant in Louisiana (15) and is backing Ivory Coast's first state-owned data center (16). This is the thread building across days: the government's balance sheet is moving upstream, from power plants toward ore and processing. It de-risks projects that private capital wouldn't touch and compresses the timeline for Western supply chains — the reason to own processing capacity, not just deposits. One caution on the uranium piece making the rounds this morning: the "$13.59 billion by 2033" note is paid stock-promotion commentary on a press-release wire, not research. Don't move conviction on it.

Two live unknowns, both filings. LEU filed an 8-K this morning and FCX filed one yesterday, both tagged "other material event" — content unread (17, 18). The FCX one is the live question mark on Grasberg. Read both before anything else today.
