Vertiv is pouring concrete in Slovakia while copper scrap sits unwanted on the dock — the AI buildout has stopped being a demand story and become a plumbing story.

The Big Shift

Vertiv is adding 22,000 square meters to its power-and-cooling factory in Slovakia — the equipment that keeps AI data centers energized and from cooking themselves. Companies don't buy factory floor unless the order book already justifies it, so this is a hard, company-specific confirmation that hyperscaler spending is landing as real orders, not slideware (1). It also relocates the bottleneck: the scarce thing is no longer the decision to build, it's the gear and the grid connection. Expect the next leg of the story to be about who can physically deliver, and who can finance the wait.

Analysis

Power is the gate, and the gate is procedural. The industry's own framing has shifted from "is there power?" to "is there a credible project, and can the power actually arrive when needed?" (2). That's a different problem than generation. Grid operators — the ISOs that run regional transmission — move at the speed of committee consensus while the physical grid does not wait (3). The implication for the thesis: value accrues to whoever shortens the wait — on-site power, storage, behind-the-meter deals, and the equipment vendors — not to whoever simply owns megawatts somewhere on a map.

Copper is the one thread arguing against us. Global scrap offers fell in both volume and quality, yet payabilities — the percentage of metal value refiners will pay — stayed flat (4). Less material with no price reaction means buyers aren't chasing it. If the structural copper deficit were real and near, scrap would tighten first — it's the fastest-responding corner of the market. Hold FCX and SCCO, but note the tension: Vertiv is building factories for a buildout whose copper is not yet being bid for. Either the metal demand shows up with a lag, or the buildout is less copper-intensive than the deficit thesis assumes.

Hormuz is loud but not yet informative. Iran is refusing to soften its demands, oil is up and equity futures down (5), but oil pared gains as talks continued and Saudi pipeline exports resumed, and European gas is fluctuating rather than breaking out (6). What's actually changed is the plumbing: barrels are taking longer, more expensive routes, so transport is becoming part of the price rather than a rounding error (7). For BE, a sustained gas spike is an explicit thesis-breaker — this is friction, not a spike. Watch, don't move.

Tariffs cracked, but in the wrong aisle. The US and China detailed cuts on agricultural goods (8). Section 232 steel and the grain-oriented electrical steel regime — the transformer-core metal that keeps CLF's pricing power intact — are untouched, so that pillar stands. But "tariffs weakened" is a named thesis-breaker, and this is the first concrete de-escalation. Soybeans today, steel later is a plausible sequence. Treat it as a live watch thread, not a position change.

The compute side cuts both ways, and neither cut is trustworthy yet. Used RTX 3090s jumped roughly 25% to about $1,500 (9), which reads as scarcity. Meanwhile hobbyists report large inference speedups on consumer hardware, including a 177-billion-parameter model streaming off an SSD at usable speeds on a single 16GB card (10). Both are forum reports with no institutional corroboration. The efficiency claim is the dangerous one for Own-the-Bottleneck: if the same work needs materially less silicon and less power, the bottleneck moves. Flag it, don't act on Reddit.

The thread building underneath all of this: the objection nobody priced is financing, and it attacks the backlog rather than the demand. Demand signals keep confirming — Vertiv's factory, power-readiness discourse, GPU prices. What's untested is whether the announced projects can raise capital through multi-year interconnection queues at current rates. A backlog that can't be funded looks identical to a strong backlog right up until it doesn't.
