Evening Analysis — 2026-10-16

Dek

The money behind AI data centers is getting nervous, but the power grid is still filling up. The gap between those two is tonight's story.

The Big Shift

Today the doubt about AI spread from stock prices into lending. Bonds from CoreWeave and other data-center builders fell on worries that they are spending and borrowing too much 1. Stock prices are mood. Bond prices are what it costs to borrow, and most of the AI buildout runs on borrowed money. If those costs keep rising, the first casualties will be the debt-funded builders (IREN, WULF, CoreWeave), not the cash-rich giants. Their equipment suppliers (VRT) would feel it a few quarters later.

Analysis

Compute and capital. Three signals point the same way. Chip stocks are on their longest losing streak since 2008, and the Nasdaq 100 just had its worst week since the April 2025 tariff shock 2. Gartner calls AI data-center spending "unsustainable" and warns of $3.5 trillion in possible write-downs, meaning assets marked down because they earn less than they cost 3. And the credit market is now pricing the same risk. Execution is wobbling too: Nscale's Norwegian site is delayed after cooling leaks and a fire, just as the company prepares to go public 4. What it means: the "growth funds itself" pillar for IREN and WULF is the weakest link tonight. VRT and GEV are exposed mainly through their high valuations, not their order books.

Power. On the physical side, demand is not slowing. PJM, ERCOT and SPP, three of the big regional grid operators, all set summer peak-load records 5. AEP is buying up to 1.6 GW of Mainspring generators, which make power on-site from gas without large turbines. It also plans to spend about $4 billion on a 702-MW Bloom fuel-cell project under contract to Google 6. Digital Realty is scouting a gigawatt-scale site in Indiana 7. What it means: builders with real cash and signed customers (Google, the large utilities) are still committing. The split is between strong balance sheets and leveraged ones, not between AI and no AI. That supports GEV's order book even while its valuation takes a hit.

Permission. The real bottleneck keeps showing up in rules and politics. PJM is drafting "ride-through" rules, which require big computing loads to stay connected through voltage dips instead of dropping off and destabilizing the grid [source](//www.rtoinsider.com/148555-pjm-pc-teac-briefs-100626/). Bonneville Power is testing an "open season" process to connect large loads faster [source](//www.rtoinsider.com/148536-bpa-seeks-to-connect-large-loads-under-open-season/). The Ohio Supreme Court's ruling on AEP's data-center tariff, which makes data centers pay more of their own grid costs, could set a pattern for other states [source](//www.rtoinsider.com/148560-national-ramifications-seen-in-ohio-aep-tariff-suit/). Meanwhile the local backlash is becoming a midterm-election issue and is colliding with federal permitting reform 8. What it means: even if money stays available, getting a grid connection and local approval decides who gets built and when. Projects that already have both are worth more.

Materials. Copper sends mixed signals, and the mix matters. The ICSG, the copper industry's main forecaster, expects the refined surplus to more than triple next year, even after counting AI demand 9. The price has fallen three days in a row 10. But metal outside the US is getting scarcer 11. Mercuria just delivered 12,000 tons of Congolese copper to the US government's Project Vault stockpile 12. Tech companies are reportedly sounding out stakes in Anglo American 13. What it means: the "global structural deficit" pillar for SCCO is cracking. What's left is a story about location and politics: copper may be plentiful in total but tight where governments and buyers want it. That's a weaker reason to own a single miner.

Geopolitics. Copper is the clearest case. Stockpiling, the Army's supply-chain mapping deadline 14, and Beijing's veto over the Anglo–Teck merger all treat metal as a security asset. Taiwan is building out its drone forces with US partners (Shield AI, AeroVironment), which shows how much the chip supply chain depends on deterring China. What it means: policy can create local shortages even during a global surplus. That helps US-based or allied supply more than global producers.
