Evening Analysis — 2026-10-20
Dek
The money for AI is still flowing, but tonight it's going to whoever sells the power gear, while the companies renting out server buildings are starting to get stuck with empty space.
The Big Shift
Grid equipment maker ABB says its US orders jumped 82%, and rival Schneider Electric posted record quarterly revenue on data-center demand. That's two of the biggest suppliers saying the same thing on the same day (1). Orders are signed commitments to buy, so they show spending a year or two out, not just this quarter. Expect the gap to keep growing between companies that sell the hardware behind AI power and companies that only rent out floor space.
Analysis
Power is now the constraint. Utilities are scrambling to add capacity without building new power plants first. A Georgia electric co-op plans 50 MW of home batteries to shave its demand peaks as hyperscalers (the giant cloud companies) ask to connect (2). California is funding two large virtual power plants, which are networks of home batteries and devices run as one plant, to absorb data-center growth (3). Amazon and X-energy signed a 960 MW nuclear deal with AEP, with Amazon covering the plant's full cost (4). When a buyer will pay the whole bill, power is the scarce input. That supports ETN and VRT, which sell the equipment, and argues against simple landlords.
Building data centers is getting harder. Nevada is pushing back on two fronts. Regulators are questioning NV Energy's standard contract for large power users (5), and the Bureau of Land Management, which manages federal land, is reopening its approval of a disputed data center on federal land (6). Slower permits favor anyone who already has a grid connection and running power. Meanwhile, OVHcloud says it has 110 MW of empty capacity (7), and Australia's Nextdc dropped sharply. A Citi banker still argued the AI build-out continues (8). Both things can be true: demand is real, but it's picky. That's why WULF, a hosting landlord, sits on watch.
The materials picture is softer. BloombergNEF, an energy research group, expects enough refined copper to meet demand until 2027. The real shortfall comes from slow mine development much later (9). Kantra's record quarter adds more supply (10). The long-term copper story still holds, but the "tight market now" story for FCX and SCCO is weaker. Rare earths, the metals used in strong magnets, are going the same way. Phoenix Tailings' $375M New York plant (11) and South Africa's first rare-earth exports (12) both chip away at MP's claim to be the only Western supplier. Each project is small, but together they add up.
Chips and geopolitics. A Reddit post claims ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent ordered more than $35B of Nvidia chips (13). It's unconfirmed and comes from a low-reliability source, so treat it as a lead. If it's true, Chinese demand for chips that run AI models (inference) is still strong despite export limits. Oil is creeping up on ship attacks near the Strait of Hormuz (14). Iran is refusing to hand over its enriched uranium (15). Both raise the value of secure domestic energy, which helps nuclear-linked names like LEU. Separately, the EU will stop paying for Chinese inverters (the devices that convert solar and battery power for the grid) on EU-funded grid projects from November 1 (16). That pushes more grid spending toward Western suppliers like ETN, ABB and Schneider.
What Would Prove Us Wrong
- ETN/VRT: Orders cool at the next reports, meaning ABB or Schneider post US order growth below 20%, or a hyperscaler cuts its 2027 spending plans. That would show today's surge was a one-off and hit both theses at full prior strength.
- WULF / the "landlords lose" idea: Nextdc's drop turns out to have nothing to do with demand, and OVH's 110 MW fills within a quarter. Then the landlord sell-off looks like noise, not a trend. The other way: one more landlord reporting empty space or a cut lease confirms the trend and should trigger the WULF cut.
- FCX/SCCO: LME copper stocks (metal held in London Metal Exchange warehouses) fall and spot prices rise despite BNEF's surplus call. That would mean AI and grid buying is soaking up supply faster than forecast, and would undo today's downgrade.
Thesis Impact
- FCX | Conviction: DOWN | Surprise: MED | BNEF (BloombergNEF, an energy research group) now expects enough refined copper to cover demand until 2027. A long-term mine shortfall only shows up later, toward 2050. That CONTRADICTS the near-term deficit pillar. Kantra Copper's record Q3 output adds a bit of new supply too. FCX is the most sensitive name to the copper price, so it gives up the most. The long-term case holds; the next 1–2 years look less tight. | 9
- SCCO | Conviction: DOWN | Surprise: MED | Same BNEF surplus call CONTRADICTS the deficit pillar for now. The cut is smaller than FCX's, because SCCO is the lowest-cost miner and stays profitable even if prices soften. Anglo's storm losses in Chile (recurring) are a small offset on supply. | 9
- MP | Conviction: DOWN | Surprise: MED | Phoenix Tailings is building a $375M plant in New York to make 4,400+ t/yr of rare-earth oxides by 2028. That is a new Western processor, at the same step where MP claims its edge. Add Steenkampskraal's first South African exports and Vulcan Elements' magnet work, and several non-China sources are moving at once. This CONTRADICTS the "only Western supplier" premium. It's not yet a second integrated mine-to-magnet producer, so the trigger isn't hit, but the edge is narrowing. | 11
- ETN | Conviction: UP | Surprise: MED | Peer ABB says US orders rose 82% as utilities rebuild and expand the grid. Schneider posted record Q3 revenue on data-center demand. Two big competitors are reporting surging electrical-equipment demand. That CONFIRMS the backlog and pricing pillar. The prior was already high (0.84), so it's a small step up. | 1
- VRT | Conviction: UP | Surprise: MED | Schneider, VRT's closest rival in data-center power and cooling, had record Q3 revenue from the data-center boom. That CONFIRMS that orders track hyperscaler spending. The prior (0.38) is low, so it has more room to move. Valuation is still the risk. | 17
- CLF | Conviction: HOLD | Surprise: LOW | ABB's 82% jump in US grid orders points to strong transformer demand, which means demand for CLF's electrical steel. That CONFIRMS pillar 2. But the earnings 8-K is recurring and already in the prior, and nothing touched tariffs or new steel supply. | 1
- ISRG | Conviction: HOLD | Surprise: LOW | Q3 results are out (8-K, primary source). The feed has no numbers on procedure growth or da Vinci 5 placements. A scheduled earnings report is expected news. Hold until those figures are checked against the 13.5–15.5% growth guide. The Seeking Alpha transcript is T3, so it's a lead only. | 18
- WULF | Conviction: HOLD | Surprise: MED | Nextdc, an Australian data-center firm, plunged (the reason is cut off in the feed). OVHcloud says it has 110 MW of empty data-center capacity. Both fit the thread of investors dumping companies that rent out buildings. That leans CONTRADICTS for the hosting-landlord pillar. Not moving yet: Nextdc's cause is unclear, OVH is one European cloud company, and Korea's Elice rebounded the same day. If one more landlord-specific sign appears, cut. | 7
- FSLR | Conviction: HOLD | Surprise: LOW | Qcells' plan for a gigawatt-scale perovskite tandem factory by 2029 points toward a thesis-breaking trigger (a competing tech reaching cost parity). But it's a recurring T3 Reddit post. Lead only; needs a T1/T2 source before it can move anything. | 19

QA & Caveats
- FCX/SCCO: The contradiction claims are supported by the copper surplus data cited in the sources.
- MP: The claim that the edge is narrowing is plausible but relies on interpreting future supply chains rather than immediate structural changes; this is a slight overread of the current evidence.
- ISRG: The Hold recommendation based on missing specific growth figures is sound.
- WULF: The contradiction regarding the hosting-landlord pillar requires more direct evidence linking the data center capacity to landlord sentiment, which is currently weak.
- FSLR: Relying on a T3 Reddit post for a "thesis-breaking trigger" is too speculative; this call should be downgraded or removed until a T1/T2 source emerges.
