Missiles in the Gulf, a typhoon over Taiwan, and a Google deal suggesting the grid has more spare room than the AI crowd assumes.
The Big Shift
Oil rose overnight after deadly attacks inside Saudi Arabia, even though more tankers are getting through the Strait of Hormuz (1). That tells us the market now prices risk to Gulf production itself, not just to the shipping lane. One unconfirmed report says Iran hit seven vessels and Brent crude (the global oil benchmark) passed $111 (2). Treat that number as a lead to check, not a fact. If it holds, power-hungry projects that burn gas face higher fuel costs, and the Gulf as a place for AI data centers starts to look shakier.
Analysis
Power: the grid may stretch further than we assumed. Google signed a 1 gigawatt deal with Voltus for a "virtual power plant," meaning many small users who agree to cut or shift their power use on demand, which frees up grid room (3). A Georgia electric co-op is also installing 50 MW of home batteries to shave peak demand as data centers line up to connect (4). Both cut against BE's core claim that data centers must build their own power and skip the grid. One deal doesn't break that thesis, but it's the first hyperscaler (giant cloud company) bet at this scale on making the existing grid work harder. Keep BE at HOLD and watch for copycats.
Permission, not power, is becoming the real limit. Memphis passed a 135-day ban on new data centers instead of the 18-month one that was proposed (5). Ontario developers say they worry more about losing grid access than about paying higher rates (6). Meanwhile, Washington is weighing 35 data-center-related projects on federal land (7), where local councils have little say. Builders are also heading abroad: Crusoe to Norway (8), Era4 to an old Welsh steelworks (9), and Nebius to 50 MW at Saudi Arabia's Neom (10). That supports Own-the-Bottleneck: sites that already have approval and power are worth more each week. The Nebius deal also means some AI capacity is going up within range of the Houthi attacks that hit Saudi Arabia this week.
Materials: supply is coming, but slowly and at a high price. Wood Mackenzie, an energy and mining consultancy, warns that mining investment is falling behind demand from AI, grids and trade shifts (11). The clearest proof: Hudbay and Mitsubishi approved the $2.1B Copper World mine in Arizona even though build costs rose 59%, and it won't produce until late 2029 (12). New copper only gets built when prices are high, which favors the cheapest existing producers like SCCO, which reported earnings yesterday. In rare earths, USA Rare Earth, the best-known US company trying to go from mine to magnet, hit a 52-week low of $9.70 (13). South Africa's new rare earth mine plans to sell its first output to China (14), and Chile's ambitions are stuck on refining (15). The bottleneck is processing, not rock. That backs MP's claim to be the only integrated Western supplier, unless investors are dumping the whole group.
Compute: the fight over rack power is starting. Infineon and Nvidia will jointly build gallium nitride (GaN) power chips for 800-volt DC racks, the new high-voltage design for AI server racks (16). The shift to 800V is real, but chipmakers working directly with Nvidia could capture value that VRT expects to win. A Reddit post claims Samsung has sold out its 2027 HBM (the fast memory stacked next to AI chips) (17). It's unconfirmed, but if true, memory joins power and copper on the list of things AI can't get enough of.
Today's watch list. Taiwan's stock market closes Friday for Typhoon Champi (18). That's mostly a one-day trading gap, but watch for any power or water outages at chip plants (fabs), since those would hit chip supply. Iran is refusing to give up its enriched uranium in talks with the US (19), so a quick end to the Gulf conflict looks less likely. On nuclear, regulators approved an urgent license change at Palisades, the Michigan reactor being restarted (20). LEU's new material agreement (filed Oct. 19) is worth reading today.
What Would Prove Us Wrong
- MP drops along with USA Rare Earth at the open (say, more than 5% on no MP-specific news). That would mean investors are leaving US rare earths as a group. It would weaken the case that a struggling rival helps MP.
- A second hyperscaler signs a gigawatt-scale demand-flexibility deal this quarter, or PJM or ERCOT (big US grid operators) speeds up hookups for data centers that agree to cut use at peak times. Either would show the grid can make room for AI, which undercuts BE's off-grid thesis.
- VRT's next earnings call names no 800V wins, or Nvidia's rack design lists Infineon-led power gear by name. That would mean the chipmakers are taking the power-conversion value, which hits VRT.
Thesis Impact
- MP | Conviction: HOLD | Surprise: MED | USA Rare Earth, the best-known US company trying to become a second Western mine-to-magnet producer, hit a 52-week low ($9.70). That makes a scaled rival look less likely soon, which CONFIRMS MP's "only integrated Western supplier" pillar. But it could also mean investors are cooling on US rare-earth stocks as a group. Check whether MP fell with it at the open: a joint drop would be a sentiment warning, not a moat win. | 13
- BE | Conviction: HOLD | Surprise: MED | Google signed a 1 GW virtual power plant deal with Voltus. A virtual power plant pools many small users who cut or shift their power use, which frees up grid capacity. This CONTRADICTS BE's core idea that data centers must go around the grid. It is one deal against about 37.5 GW of such capacity in North America, so it is a watch item, not a break. There is also a gas-cost risk from the Hormuz escalation (Brent above $111 after 7 vessels were hit), but that report is T3 only, so it can't move conviction. | 3
- Own-the-Bottleneck | Conviction: HOLD | Surprise: LOW | Two items CONFIRM the thesis. Wood Mackenzie, an energy consultancy, warns that mining investment is lagging AI, grid and trade demand for metals. And the US is weighing 35 data-center-related projects on federal land. That second item fits our cross-domain thread: federal land can get around local permission fights, so sites that already have approval and power gain value. This is expected news, so no change. | 11
- VRT | Conviction: HOLD | Surprise: MED | Infineon and Nvidia will jointly develop gallium nitride (GaN) power-conversion chips for 800-volt DC data-center racks. It confirms that rack power is being redesigned, but it is a mild CONTRADICTION: chipmakers working directly with Nvidia could capture power-conversion value that VRT counts on. ETN is less exposed because its business is more diversified. Watch VRT's next earnings call for its 800VDC product wins. | 16
- SCCO | Conviction: HOLD | Surprise: LOW | Wood Mackenzie's supply warning CONFIRMS the copper-deficit pillar. On the other side, new supply is building, and those items are recurring, already-priced news. Hudbay's $2.1B Copper World mine in Arizona got approval despite 59% higher construction costs, but it won't produce until late 2029. First Quantum's Kansanshi expansion in Zambia is running above design capacity. Both add supply but don't break the thesis. The higher construction costs also show that new copper needs high prices to get built, which supports the lowest-cost producer. FCX reads the same way. | 11
